Alcohol, Sex, and Gender in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe This book examines the effects of alcohol on gender relations in traditional Europe, focussing on England, France, and Italy in the late medieval and early modern periods, roughly 1300 to 1700. While alcohol causes physiological changes that are scientifically verifiable, the work of anthropologists reveals that much of what passes for drinking behavior and drunken comportment varies from one society to the next. In traditional Europe, as in modern Western societies, drinking led to increased sexual activity for both men and women, and it inclined men to commit acts of violence. Despite male fears of female sexuality and despite patriarchal restraints, women still consumed alcoholic beverages, sometimes in gargantuan amounts. This widespread consumption of wine, ale, or beer illustrates the importance of alcohol in traditional Europe. Alcohol was the ubiquitous social lubricant, and alcoholic beverages formed an important part of most people's diets.
National Alcohol Beverage Control Association - The National Alcohol Beverage Control Association was established in 1937 as the nationwide organization representing the interests of alcohol beverage control or monopoly sale states in the U.S. Alcohol - In general usage, alcohol (from Arabic al-kukhūl الكحول = "the spirit", "the chemical".) refers almost always to ethanol, also known as grain alcohol, and often to any beverage that contains ethanol (see alcoholic beverage). Marin Institute for the Prevention of Alcohol and Other Drug Problems - The Marin Institute for the Prevention of Alcohol and Other Drug Problems is an organization that promotes reduction of consumption alcohol policies. These include increasing the taxes on alcoholic beverages, reducing the hours during which time alcohol can be sold, increasing the size of warning labels on alcoholic beverage containers, requiring warnings on all alcohol advertisements, restricting the content and placement of alcohol ads, and prohibiting alcohol sponsorship of athletic events. Denatured alcohol - Denatured alcohol is ethanol with added adulterants that make it useless for consumption as an intoxicating beverage by rendering it toxic or extremely distasteful to drink, but still useful for industrial processes or as a household chemical. This is done in order to make it exempt from taxes that apply to potable alcohol.
